I nursed my child for 3 ½ years. And it’s a time I remember very fondly. As he reached about 6 months old, though, he became increasingly distracted while he was nursing – popping on and off my breast at whim (often mid-letdown) so he could look around, stare at the bird in the tree, watch the people as they strolled down the street, and so on. As you can imagine, this made nursing in public a bit challenging. It also meant that feeding him could take a very, very long time. It wasn’t until I made a nursing necklace to keep him focused while eating (or, at least, purposefully distracted) that he kept his focus on nursing and keeping his hands occupied by twiddling away at the necklace. That necklace was a life-saver, but – it was made of stone. Unlike newer nursing necklaces, my homemade version was heavy and hard. While he could play with it, he certainly couldn’t gum it when he was teething (and he did want to).
